The Mallock Club

Inaugural Event at Silverstone 12th June 2005

Report by Martin Covill

A combination of the BRDC Summer Races and the celebration of 40 years of Clubmans Racing at Silverstone on 12th June became the perfect occasion for the public launch of the Mallock Club.

Our lively barbecue, with music provided by Clubmans legend Caldwell Smythe, became the focal point of the paddock on Saturday Evening with dancing and merriment until the early hours.

A selection of Mallock cars spanning 40 years were displayed on our stand from Ray Mallock's pristine Mk6b to the latest Mk35b chassis.

Ray's special guest, Max Mosely, the Chairman of the FIA, himself a former Clubmans racing driver, met many of our members on the stand before leading the parade of over 70 cars around the National Circuit. Mr Mosley commented that he was delighted that the friendly and casual atmosphere in the paddock was exactly how he remembered it in the 1970's. I am sure you will all be pleased to hear that Mr Mosley has accepted our offer of life membership of the Mallock Club.

It is not often that speed event cars turn up in the Silverstone paddock so we were particularly pleased to see Brian and Simon Moyse immaculate Mk 27SG Championship winning Hillclimber and Tony Bunker's Mk 32b Sprint car. Unfortunately the 27 could not do a parade lap as it is not fitted with a suitable radiator but Tony took the Mk 32b round and used the occasion to bed in his new racing clutch!!

Spare a thought for Fyrth Crosse who was involved in an accident on the morning of the event and was unable to bring his historic Mk2 to the stand. Fyrth assures me that he is now fine and we look forward to seeing his car displayed in the future.

The event prompted many membership enquiries and about 20 new members joined on the day.

Our special thanks to the Clubmans Register who put in all the hard work to make the 40th Anniversary event a stunning success, James Beckett from the BRDC who gave us so much help and encouragement and of course the Mallock family, Richard, Sue, Ray, Elaine, Charles and Carol for their enthusiasm and support.

Well, that's set the standard, look out for the next one!!!
