Richard and Ray Mallock produced
the November 5th fireworks in with two fiercely contested races at Silverstone. Richard driving Martin Covill’s
mid-engine P20 and Ray in his fabulous classic Mk 11 upheld Mallock Club honours by dominating a 13 car Mallock entry in both
8 Clubs races at the prestige Walter Hayes Trophy meeting on Saturday. Mallock Club members John Bailey and Charlie Mallock
ran the two cars which performed beautifully in both races.
In race one Ray surprised Martin
Short in his mighty Mosler, two radical SR8’s and the 3.5lt Jade by bursting into the lead in his diminutive Mk.11.
As the race settled down the higher powered cars got past leaving Ray, closely followed by Richard leading the following miscellany
of cars including 11 other Mallocks. The brothers continued in this order until the final part of the last lap when Richard
took the better option as Ray caught a back-marker and dived in front to take the honours.
Richard managed to hold Ray
off in race two when again they led the Mallock pack to the finish. There was a repeat of the last lap drama when Richard
seemed to miss a gear at Luffield and Ray got within inches of beating him to the line.
The 8 Clubs races were the highlight
of a super Club gathering with members Marcus Bicknell (going very fast in Adrian Lester’s Mk.35), Mark Charteris, Dave
Smith, Steve Pryke, Pete Burnham, Shane Butler and Alan Davenport taking part. Our sympathy goes to Steve Pryke who was taken
out in his wonderful Mk.6 which sustained significant damage. Thankfully Steve was unhurt in what looked like a very big shunt.
John Hestletine and Derek Clark,
who between them built the very first non-works Mallock, were our guests at the meeting and produced a fascinating collection
of documents and photographs to be reproduced in the members section of the site. Member Martin Collins brought his ‘barn
find’ chassis that was identified by the experts as a genuine Mk.4. Martin intends to restore the car to its former
glory. We also welcomed Mick Paris who helped and raced with Arthur in the early days and finished his engineering career
with Ray at RML. We also had a visit from Richard Gilmour, member and Clubmans returnee who is entering the K sport championship
next season.
Sue Mallock and Kathy Covill
provided a superb lunch menu of Chicken curry and boeuf bourguignon to keep out the November chill. I think we did justice
to the Mallock tradition at the 8 Clubs and we hope to welcome more members next year to this wonderful ‘end of season’
gathering.
