Potholing in Derbyshire 2007

Six brave souls took up Dick's offer to go potholing one Thursday night in Derbyshire.

Tom nearly made it but declined at the last minute when he realised that he had a hair appointment. Concerns about underground water levels were not founded, ex Clubman's champion brought along his 2 boys Adam and Dan, current Championship leader Adrian brought along his son James and ex-champion Mike Evans came along with his yellow Marigold gloves.

We all met outside the entrance of the cave (Suicide cave, Winnets Pass, west of Castleton). Sue kept a lookout outside but the first thing she heard when we had gone in only 100 ft was we had seen a sign saying the roof was liable to collapse, but no one seemed to mind. Using ropes and finding some very tight squeezes into upper chambers with good traverses across 20ft drops which Alan dropped his safety helmet down.
It was very sobering when we all switched out lights off to appreciate total darkness. After an hour and quarter we decided to return to the surface and it was great to see the first shaft of daylight.

Sue had gone off to Castleton to get the beers in and order some food, why she ordered 8 x Toad-in-the-hole, I cant imagine!

Everyone enjoyed it even though we were wet and muddy, bit like 2 weeks earlier at Le-Mans.
